What is TCM?

Chinese Medicine is an ancient system of healthcare that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. Its fundamental principles are rooted in the belief that human beings are an integral part of the natural world and that health and wellness result from a balance between our internal and external environments. In this post, we introduce some of the basic theories of Chinese Medicine used in diagnosis and treatment.

Yin and Yang
One of the fundamental concepts in Chinese Medicine is the idea of Yin and Yang. These are opposing forces that exist in all aspects of life and the natural world. Yin is associated with qualities such as darkness, coldness, and rest, while Yang is associated with light, warmth, and activity. The balance between Yin and Yang is essential to good health, and any imbalance can lead to illness and disease.

Qi
Another essential concept in Chinese Medicine is the idea of Qi, which can be translated as vital energy. Qi is the force that animates all living things and circulates throughout the body via pathways known as meridians. When Qi flows freely and is balanced, the body is healthy, but when Qi is blocked or stagnant, it can lead to pain, illness, and disease.

Five Elements
The Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, and each is associated with specific organs, emotions, and body systems. In Chinese Medicine, these elements are thought to be interconnected and to influence each other. When there is an imbalance in one element, it can affect the others and lead to health problems.

Zang Fu Organs
In Chinese Medicine, the body is seen as a complex system of organs that work together to maintain health and balance. There are two categories of organs in Chinese Medicine: Zang and Fu. The Zang organs are solid and include the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. The Fu organs are hollow and include the gallbladder, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and bladder. Each of these organs has a specific function and is associated with different emotions, elements, and meridians.

Working Together
Chinese Medicine offers a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on treating the whole person, not just the symptoms of a specific condition. By understanding the basic principles of Chinese Medicine, potential patients can gain a deeper appreciation for this ancient system of healthcare and the many ways it can help promote health and wellness.
