Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of health conditions. In recent years, acupuncture has become increasingly popular as a complementary therapy to conventional medical treatments. Is is the most widely used traditional medical practice globally, and researchers are uncovering increasing evidence of its effectiveness in treating various conditions.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a practice that involves the insertion of thin needles, (~0.25mm in diameter) into specific points on the body to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is believed to work by restoring the flow of energy or "qi" in the body. When the flow of qi is disrupted, it can lead to a wide range of health conditions.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of health conditions, including but not limited to:
  • Management of symptoms in cancer, stroke and dementia
  • Pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches
  • Digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and acid reflux
  • Women's health conditions such as menstrual cramps and infertility
  • Respiratory conditions such as allergies and asthma
  • Mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is thought to work by stimulating the body's natural healing processes. The insertion of needles into specific points on the body can help to stimulate the nervous system, release endorphins (the body's natural painkillers), and promote blood flow to the affected area. Additionally, acupuncture can help to reduce stress and anxiety, which are often associated with a wide range of health conditions.

What can I expect during an acupuncture session?
During an acupuncture session, the acupuncturist inserts thin needles into specific points on your body which are left in place for 20-30 minutes while you relax. Some people may experience a mild sensation during the insertion of the needles similar to an ant's bite, but most people find the experience to be relaxing and relatively painless.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
The number of acupuncture sessions you will need will depend on your individual needs and the condition being treated. Acute conditions may require only a few sessions, while chronic conditions may require ongoing treatment. Your acupuncturist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your individual needs.

Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is generally considered safe when practiced by a licensed and experienced acupuncturist. The needles used in acupuncture are sterile and disposable, and the risk of infection is extremely low. However, as with any medical treatment, there are some risks associated with acupuncture, such as minor bruising or transient bleeding at the site of the needle insertion. It is important to discuss any concerns you may have with your acupuncturist before beginning treatment.

How do I find an acupuncturist?
To find a licensed and experienced acupuncturist, you can ask for recommendations from your healthcare provider or search online for MOH-licensed acupuncturists in your area. It is important to choose an acupuncturist who is licensed and has experience treating the condition you are seeking treatment for.

Acupuncture is a safe and effective complementary therapy for a wide range of health conditions. If you are considering acupuncture as a treatment option, it is important to find a licensed and experienced acupuncturist who can develop a treatment plan that meets your individual needs. Acupuncture can help to reduce pain, promote healing, and improve overall health and well-being.
